Mollepata is the longest of the three routes with the highest pass of the mountain and intersects with the classic route before crossing Warmiwañusqa ("dead woman").

Located in the Andes mountain range, the road passes through several types of Andean environments including cloud forest and alpine tundra. Settlements, tunnels and many Inca ruins are found along the track before finishing the terminal at Puerta del Sol on the mountain of Machu Picchu. The two longest routes require an ascent up to over 4,200 meters (13,800 feet) above sea level, which can result in altitude sickness.
